This was the first week with students. I love being a teacher. Marc may not believe me since he's had to be the one listening to me bear of all of my "issues" with the non-accredited school district. But, really, I do love it. While it's been VERY rough this week (not just for me, for the whole staff), I love seeing the joy on one of my kid's face when I say something simple like "It's time for Math!". I love seeing my kids' eagerness and willingness to learn, even though some people may classify them as "unable to learn". I love the feeling I get when one of my non-verbal students (well, that's most of them I guess) finds a creative way to communicate with me. I love watching a severely Austic child (whose only goal in his IEP is to "draw a straight line") walk up to a chalk board and start writing and SAYING the numbers 1-10 for the very first time....with no help or cues from the teacher! (It was amazing...it was like he has been hearing and seeing this for years...and it just all of a sudden CAME OUT OF HIM!)
I love that the teachers always have smiles on their faces as we pass each other...even though we all know we're completely stressed and exhausted. I love the little girl who only knows how to say "Pepe". "Pepe (I need to go potty)." "Pepe (I want to play with the blocks)." "Pepe (She bit me)."
I love watching one of my autistic students sign "thank you" to the caferteria lady...without being asked to do so. I loved seeing the face of one of my students when she saw her brand new, hot pink, electric wheelchair...just for her.
It has been a wild ride this week. My back hurts, my head hurts, and I'm run down. But I honestly don't think I'd trade it for anything. | | |
| I am running a crazy marathon tomorrow!!! That's right...probably as you are reading this right NOW, I am running 26.2 miles through the streets of Nashville. So, say a little pray for me...for endurance and strong joints. Love you all! | | |
